A dear friend of mine, a B.F.F. even, sent me a note when I left for London that I think of and smile.

It went like this:

Have a safe and comfortable flight, my BFF! I spent the summer of 1974 in England and loved it! Especially the rainy night I went to a pub with two handsome Englishmen. As the patrons in their Burberry trench coats came into the pub, they shook the water off their umbrellas and settled at the polished wood tables with their drinks. I think someone brought a large dog in as well. The rainy drive over the green downs, the Englishmen, the pub, the warm lager – this evening could have been a scene from a movie! I hope you have your own move-scene evening in England! Let me know when it happens.

It may be called the London temple but it is nowhere near being within the city limits. But either way we loaded up the bus and set off to spend a few hours in the House of the Lord.

In true British fashion, we were greeted very politely, shuffled through and sent on our way. It was a perfect morning.

When we got back to the city, a group of us hopped on the Tube towards Picadilly Circus for a matinee of The 39 Steps. What talent, what humor, what entertainment.

And without a moment to catch our breathe after the show, we headed to the Aguirre family’s home on the outskirts of London.

In true Argentine fashion, we were greeted with shouting and enthusiasm, flooded with food and chatter, and hardly able to leave. It was a perfect evening.

A game of cricket in Hyde Park in the morning.
Afternoon tea at Kensington Palace in the afternoon.
And an evening showing of Mouse Trap, the world’s longest running play, at St. Martin’s Theatre.

Visiting the baths in Bath, England was a treat. I’ve been hot tubbing in Provo more times than I can count so seeing the roots of hot tubbing just helped me to justify all of those late night dips during college.

The Romans went for more than to show off their “hot bods” (not why I go either), they went to meditate and worship in the natural springs – genius!

After learning this, five us grabbed our suits, paid our dues and took an overpriced, but much enjoyed, dip in an authentic bath – a roman bath.

During my stay in London I received a text that changed everything. Well not quite everything, but it changed something – my plans in October.

The texting conversation went a little something like this.

Mom: I think you drew a deer tag for the Book Cliffs.

Me: Are you serious?

Mom: Actually, I don’t think so. I think it’s just a regular tag.

(She couldn’t believe it either)

(I was thinking, thank goodness)

Kyle: Scott, you got a deer permit to the Book Cliffs!

Mom: Kyle looked at it, and it’s true. You got it.

To most of you this probably means nothing, and quite honestly it didn’t mean that much to me either. The difference between you and me is that I know what this kind of news should mean and what it means to some people – some people like my dad or brothers, or good family friends.

It should have meant the world.

It can take between five and ten years of submission into the annual drawing to draw a deer tag to the Book Cliffs.

I got the permit from my first entry.

Knowing this, I became overwhelmed. In fact, it was more than overwhelming – I felt like I didn’t deserve it (which I don’t) since I didn’t really care. I entered the drawing on a whim, literally because everyone was doing it. It was one more step of what we call the “Scott Accepting His Outdooor-Self” Campaign.

But because I have the tag for this October, I’m going to make the most of it.

The Book Cliffs is where the monster bucks are – or so I’ve been told . . . or so I’ve been told my entire life!

My dad, his brother Dale, and best friends Rob and Byron used to hunt in the Book Cliffs every year during the 80’s and early 90’s, and according to their stories, they almost died every year. Because in every Book Cliffs hunting story their horses ran away, the snow was up to their waists, they ran out of food, all of their possessions were soaked and they were drinking the only water they could find from hoof prints on the ground.

Oh and I forgot to mention that they always came home with a monster buck.

Stop rolling your eyes at all of the west-end shows I've been seeing. I'm American and I like American shows, so get over it.

I've seen Wicked in L.A., New York, and now London.

I have to say that seeing Wicked with British accents was charming. "Dancing through life" will never quite measure up to "dawncing through life." Trust me, there's a difference between the two.

Elphaba's voice in London was the most amazing sound I've ever heard live. I'd go again just to hear her . . sigh.

Okay, I probably do need to say more. A friend, who I respect, saw the show a few months ago and really loved it. Her recommendation was enough for me. I hadn't seen the movie then but I had a pretty good idea of what it might be like. The music was outstanding and it was ridiculously entertaining on all levels.

It was, what is was and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I visited the Queen's weekend home. I just loved what she's done with the place and the fluffy hat soldiers were a nice touch too.

I've heard some say that there is a church on every corner in Utah. Next time I hear that, I'll ask, "Have you been to Europe?"

I have visited many churches during the six weeks that I've been here so far. The churches are ancient and represent much of the history and culture of worship that once saturated this land and the lives of it's people. Now it seems they are crowded with tourists, photography and admission prices.

The churches are ornate and detailed to say the least. Everything about them is massive, and even suffocating. The style and custom craftsmanship represents work and dedication to God. I am always impressed by every carefully built square inch of the buildings.

On Sundays I attend The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I leave my house at nine a.m. and return home at three p.m. During that time I walk, ride a train, and walk some more, attend a sacrament meeting, teach a sunday school class, attend a priesthood meeting, walk, ride a train, and walk some more.

When I started attending the Clapham Common Ward six weeks ago I knew exactly what the meetings would be like, but I didn't know how much I would learn from other church members and especially from those I teach in the gospel principles class.

They are amazing.

If you don't think you know who the Four Seasons are, then I'll tell you that you do. Because you do.

"Sherry," "Walk Like a Man," "Oh What a Night" . . ringing a bell? Even if it's not, you've heard their songs on commercials at the very least.

The acting was solid and the singing was record quality. The show made me love their music even more because I learned how the group formed, fell apart, reformed and transformed into what it was in the end.

As I watched their story, I saw how and why they wrote their songs. Context is powerful.

More than anything, I'm just happy to know why "Big Girls Don't Cry."

The changing of the guard in London is beautiful. The soldier's uniforms are majestic, they march in front of Buckingham Palace, and play shiny gold instruments - that's why it's beautiful.

Sure, they exclusively play American hits and you expect that at any moment they'll start playing the Star Spangled Banner followed by fireworks shot from behind the palace, but if you don't listen to the music, it's a completely British experience.

Punting is an art. And it takes practice. That's what I learned from Cambridge.

Here is what wikipedia has to say:

A punt is a flat-bottomed boat with a square-cut bow, designed for use in small rivers or other shallow water. Punting refers to boating in a punt. The punter generally propels the punt by pushing against the river bed with a pole. A punt should not be confused with a gondola, which is propelled by an oar rather than a pole.

Punts were originally built as cargo boats or platforms for fowling and angling, but in modern times their use is almost exclusively confined to pleasure trips.

City of bikes . .

In many parts of Cambridge you can't drive - it's bikes only. I can't explain to you how many bikes there are. It was nuts. Okay fine, I'll try to explain. I was leaning up against a fence and a man riding his bike gave me the "you are wasting a perfectly good bike parking spot" and I was. I took a hint and told him I'd move. He verbally agreed that it was a good idea and I nodded in agreement. Provo parking flashbacks followed.

Spending the day in Cambridge was a delight. We went on a tour of Pennbrook College, King's College (where we ran into the Brother and Sister Tanner, yeah, the prominent Mormon folk), visited the Christopher Wren Library, went punting in the river behind the colleges and attended evensong at King's College Chapel.

I really wanted to eat at the Cambridge cafeteria. I was obsessed with doing it, obsessed enough to ask a Cambridge student to take me. Thank you Artes! My friend Alison joined Artes and I and it was a feast of food and people watching. Like all schools they have jocks, geeks, preps and mean girls.

Beyond the cafeteria, they also have the option to attend a formal dinner after evensong, which is also done every night. I love their traditions and the community it creates. The formal dinner is candlelit, robes are worn and waiters serve dinner. I had to peek in and it was 100% Harry Potter style.

I'd go every night.

Oh, and did I mention that there are bikes everywhere?

A British accent is one thing and a Scottish accent is another. I went on a tour of the castle in Edinburgh, Scotland and I probably understood about 70% of what the tour guide said. Seventy percent may sound like a lot but missing 30% is also missing a lot of information. Next time I’ll just have to stick to the audio tour.

Beyond the accents and the castles, Scotland is full of gems. Baked potatoes drenched in homemade mac ‘n cheese happened to be one of the more memorable gems. And if you know how I feel about mac ‘n cheese (and not the stuff out of the box) then you’ll know that I was happy as a lark.

I hiked Arthur’s seat, saw the Royal Yacht, walked the Royal Mile, pondered in the National Gallery, and ran to the top of Carlson Hill. Between the two views, I think I’ve seen a big chunk of Scotland. Okay, I probably missed more than 70% of it but the 30% that I think I saw but probably didn’t is a lot too.

Being on the beach makes me want to be a poet. I don’t think about anything deep or profound. I just think and thinking makes me want to be a poet.

We visited Durdle Door Beach on our way back from a trip to Bath, Bristol and Stonehenge. Between the high winds and the scenery, it took my breath away.

It was interesting to see what different people do on the beach. There were people singing any song they could think of (of course they were BYU students), some were skipping rocks, some walked down the beach with their socks off, others buried themselves in the pebbled sand, there was journal writing and I’m sure that were at least one or two idiots texting (such a chosen generation).

One day I’ll be a poet – beach or no beach.

A few things I learned . .

Stonehenge was built between 3100 – 1100 BCE.

The circle was built to align with the midsummer sunrise, the midwinter sunset, and with the most southerly rising and northerly setting of the moon.

The formation and construction of Stonehenge demonstrates a great understanding in math and geometry.

The builders used two types of stones used in its construction: the bluestones which weighed as much as four tons and were brought from 240 miles away) and the Sarsen stones (averaging about eighteen feet in height and twenty-five tons in weight).

Experts have also estimated that the construction of Stonehenge required more than thirty million hours of labor.

There are more than nine hundred stone rings exist in the British Isles but Stonehenge is the most well known. I also visited one in Avebury - it had a much larger radius.

The rock formations in Britain predate eastern Mediterranean, Egyptian, Mycenaean and Greek cultures.

Shopping with your camera is more fun than you think. I'm on a new kick, well it's not really a new kick, it's more of a lifelong plan. I like to collect things, or at least I used to. While in London, I'm not buying anyTHING. By that I mean, I'm not buying things - I'm just buying experiences.

If you haven't read this, then read it and you'll see what I mean - I gave you two links so go on and read it.

A few weeks ago a group of us went to Abbey Road and got our picture. Check that one off the bucket list. We arrived at 7 a.m. to avoid major traffic. I admire anyone who snaps this shot successfully. It's a challenge to dodge cars AND pose.

Shortly after we headed over to Portobello Market (you know the market from Notting Hill where Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts fall in love). It's just a few blocks from where I live and it's everything a market should be; lots of antiques, delicious food, fresh produce and fascinating people.

Here are three things I bought with my camera. Yes, even the camera is on a budget.

Cell phones are so overdone.
Yes, it's a door knocker. I've always wanted a lion on my door and now I'll have a functional lion on my door.
You can never have enough luggage and I'm sure it could double as a coffee table.

Lion King the musical was a creative explosion. Yes, an explosion. I was overwhelmed and moved. The costumes, the singing, the dancing and the feeling created gave me chills song after song.

A few days later I went to the Victoria and Albert Museum and found costumes from the show in their theater exhibit. Once again, chills. This time it was the mask, the beads, the fabric and the elegance. Seeing them up close was a whole new experience.

For my art class I have to sketch two pieces of art in every museum we visit in London. I sketched these costumes. As I sketched, I got to know every inch of the costume. And now I can say with more surety than I ever wanted that costume designer Julie Taymor knew exactly what she was doing and she did it well.

Brilliance, pure brilliance.

Nicknames . .

I've had a few nicknames in my day . .

Scotty, Scoot, Scooter, Cristofero, Christy (short for my last name - a missionary thing) but when I arrived in London I got a new nickname.

So, I'm studying abroad in London. I know, I know . . great way to avoid reality after graduation, right? Right! It was now or never, and it's now . . apparently. So let's sum it up. 35 girls. 6 guys (I'll explain later). 3 professors and their families. 2 brazilians (they cook and tidy up).

Back to the nickname thing. One of my professors has the most adorable four year old daughter and she calls me Scotch.

And now, so does everyone else.

Oh and that list of people - 61 in total. Yeah we all live together in the same house, but I'll save that for another post.

My dad is an artist . .

A jaunt down south . .

Just before winter semester ended my family spent the weekend in St. George to celebrate my graduation, Kade's birthday and just life in general. Not to mention, we like to hang out together - any excuse is a good excuse.

Lou had many moments of event planning genius including the graduation cap desserts. How sweet are those?! I’m still dreaming about the trays of peanut butter bars she made (my personal favorite).

Among eating, golfing and hiking, we even made a little time for a game of speed and dodgeball in the backyard. Dodgeball gets even better after elementary school, especially when you hear adult participants say things like, “let’s take out the little kids first, and then we’ll worry about the adults” or “oh my gosh, I just hit my baby with the ball.”

Even though my siblings have mortgages and kids of their own, we love to play the same old games and laugh about the same old things.

Some things never change. Thank goodness.

This was Grandma Lexie’s junior prom. She went to show her grandmother her dress just before the dance with my Grandpa Ken.

An introduction I'll never forget . .

Jamie sure knows how to make someone feel like a million bucks. I arrived a little late to the Best Buddies talent show yesterday and, he being the great emcee that he is, introduced me as I walked in. His enthusiasm was overcoming - I have never felt more welcomed.

I met Jamie in the Center for Service and Learning at BYU where he volunteers over 900 hours each year. Before coming to the Center almost four years ago, Jamie served at the Orem City Library and has completed church service missions at the Bean Museum and Museum of Art at BYU.

Jamie’s hard work to help student volunteers certainly does not go unnoticed. He is the data analyst; a task that requires hours of work with financial forms that he makes sure are accurate. I must admit that I have purposely neglected to sign forms just so he would call and leave a message informing me of my error. Jamie leaves the best messages.

Last school year as I was serving as the Center’s event director, Jamie was an answer to my prayers. I was really sick with the flu the night before an event I was planning for more than one hundred of our community partners. At nearly 10:00 p.m. as I laid on the sofa thinking about how I could possibly get everything done in my condition, I said a silent prayer that somehow I could prepare for the event the next morning. Within minutes, I received a call from Jamie Taylor asking if he could take the early bus to arrive early the next day and help me get ready for the Community Partner Luncheon.

Jamie will always serve others more than we can serve him.

We’re horse people, promise . .

This past weekend we had to put Fiddle down. We were all sad to lose another horse and I sincerely think my dad was deep in mourning. He lost several thousand dollars, but more than anything, he lost a dear friend.

My friend, Casey, wrote this poem in memory of Fiddle.

“You have lost a dear friend,
In Fiddle your horse, his life did end.
He followed the path of other horses
on the Christofferson Place,
And now he’s in a deep hole with
dirt covering his face.
No longer can the family jump onto
his back and fly.
For Fiddle is now chasing
white calves in the sky!”

*Note: Fiddle was a girl. And I’ll explain the white calf thing sometime.

After conference on Sunday we sat around and talked about all of our horse memories – the good and the bad.

This is a list of the horses that have passed away under our care.

I love a good compliment. I love giving them, and I love receiving them.

Today in BYU’s travel office my agent helper person, Julie Ann, told me that I have beautiful teeth. I couldn’t stop smiling; and not because I wanted to show them off, but because I appreciated her comment so much.

That said, I know it’s important to give ourselves recognition; because if we wait for it to come from others, it’s easy to be resentful when the compliments don’t come or we don’t accept them when they do come. When we compliment ourselves, the glow sticks.

Giving ourselves praise when we deserve it is important, but Julie Ann's compliment still has me smiling.

Meatloaf is worth a try . .

Last night I dined with three friends.

I learned the following from that St. Patrick’s Day dinner party.

• I love meatloaf despite its lunchroom menu stereotype.

• Pistachio pudding has a turquoise ocean color that you’d see in a magazine (didn’t see that coming).

• I’m not as good at making Brazilian lemonade as I was last summer.

• I want to watch American Idol more often (we kept it on mute until the good parts).

• I am a connector, my best friend is a maven, and the other two, well, they’re good people but they’re certainly not salesmen.

• Professor Harold Hill (the Music Man) is my alter ego.

So glad I dined with three friends last night.

Secret Carrier . .

Sometimes I think we are little too obsessed with saving money because a lot of the time we're not really saving.

I recently came up with the "Secret Carrier Philosophy." On Kayak.com, sometimes there is a flight option given to you that says "Secret Carrier." Details on the flight are very sparse and will often say, "Departure: 4-6pm, Arrival: 12-2pm." Not very promising. In the case I was looking at, this particular flight was only $13 cheaper than the others listed. The philosophy is such that there are those who will save a few dollars to be inconvenienced substantially and have many unknowns that cause stress.

We all know someone who has scheduled a flight at 6am rather than 9am just to save 5 dollars, or completely overlooks flight details because of the price and ends up with a super long layover somewhere just to save a buck. Whether you're rich or not, you still have your intelligence. Let's not be the "Secret Carrier" type.

I've been talking about this for years. The RSVP is so important.

R.S.V.P. stands for the French phrase, "répondez, s'il vous plaît," which means please reply or respond, please. People just don't get it. Which is tragic because it's the antidote to creating a successful event.

It doesn't matter what language it's in, it means to be considerate by letting the host know if you'll be there. There are only two possible responses - no or yes, and a maybe means no.

Most people will give you several days or even weeks to respond, not me, I just say "R.S.V.P. Immediately." It saves us all from a little stress and the possibility of forgetting.

So the next time you get the chance to R.S.V.P. - do it immediately, and remember that maybe means no.

I took my walk through Georgetown on Halloween, yikes! There were people and cops everywhere but the energy made it very fun. I absolutely love Georgetown. I live two blocks away and I try to visit as much as possible.

Arlington Cemetery - Count every headstone in one row, while still being respectful.

I never thought a cemetery could be so appealing. My first stop was the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I practically ran to the tomb because I knew the changing of the guards would take place shortly after I hopped off the metro train. I went from being in a frantic scurry, to a state of complete solemn wonder during the ceremony.

Each step the soldiers took was precise, each phrase was perfectly cited and the feeling was surreal. I enjoy observing things that are done exactly right.

I couldn't help but admire the soldiers for being so good at what they do. That may sound silly, but a person who can do exactly what they are told every time is a rare gem. But what was most impressive was that they know why they were doing what they do.

#17 Tour Old Town Alexandria . .

Last Saturday night I went on a ghost tour of Old Town Alexandria. I knew I would love it for a couple of reasons. First of all, the tour guide was wearing a kilt and had a Santa Clause beard. I'm sure ghost tour guide is just one of his many seasonal jobs. Second, he told us within the first three minutes that he is the chairman and founder of the D.C. Paranormal Society. Boy were we in for a treat.

The tour was beyond entertaining and I learned more about the history of Old Town Alexandria than I thought I would. George Washington had a house there. He called it his "town house." He coined that term. Just another reason to love George.

In days gone by, everyone who had an eligible daughter would paint their door a periwinkle color to solicit dating opportunies. If only it were that easy now. To this day, the city issues a mandate to one home in the city to paint their door a periwinkle color for one year. I love that. I'm not above using a little force to make things happen.

BGA. Have you ever heard of it? It’s a little something I like to call Big Group Anxiety. I live in the same building with about 35 BYU interns. We do a lot together and we love being together . . . really, we do, but sometimes I come down with a case of BGA.

I spent Conference Weekend in Richmond, Virginia. My friend invited me to go with her and three friends to her family’s home to watch General Conference and take a breather from DC life.

The trip was pure bliss.

Home cooked meals by her dear mother. Seven layer taco dip (so much better without the beans). Twelve mile run around lakes, forest trails, local schools, and abandoned coalmines. General Conference. Player piano sing alongs in the living room. Bunk beds. Cinnamon rolls. More General Conference.

Richmond was a great BGA recovery.

This trip provided a great venue for reflecting on the lives and contributions of Abraham Lincoln and John Brown. I see Abraham Lincoln as a founding father, a founding father of the U.S. after the Civil War. Thanks Abe.

I heard a woman saying that we live in the worst time in history. Not true. Did she forget about the Civil War and the bloody battles fought in Gettysburg during the miserable July humidity? Bless her.

I have been to two amazing shows. “All’s Well that Ends Well” by Shakespeare. And the totally underrated 80’s musical, “Chess,” with music written by half of ABBA. Both great for different reasons AND a great boost to my “get more cultured" campaign.

Now turn up your volume and listen to my favorite song from “Chess.” It's a lot 80's and from a story that takes place in Thailand. It just is what it is.

I’ve been to two Nationals Games so far. So far, so good. They are ranked dead last in MLB rankings but I have watched them beat the Mets and the Braves with my own eyes. Things are looking better for the Nats.

I must admit my favorite part of the game is watching not one, not two, not three, but FOUR bobble head mascots race around the field during the fourth inning. Never gets old.

I've fallen completely in love with Mount Vernon. I sincerely want to live there. George Washington chose his home well.

The view from the porch of the Potomac River is breathtaking. I literally gasped the first (okay, and the second) time I walked out the door to the back porch from the formal dining room.

I've been to the estate twice and I'll be going back for more. I think I'll take a book from now on.

The grounds are beautiful, the ferry rides are peaceful, the seasonal events are wonderful . . . an Annual Pass is needful.

My Quest for True Washingtonianship . .

Lou (being the amazing sister in law that she is) sent me an envelope. In the envelope was a poem and a list. A poem of encouragement. And a list of 20 activities to become a “True Washingtonian.” Let the games begin.

As I complete these tasks (in no particular order) I’ll post a number, the requirement, and photographic proof.

The poem went a little something like this . . .

So here's a little something to occupy your time;

Family Pictures is the event we patiently avoid for a couple of years until the family is going to be separated even more than before. Sometimes it’s a mission or college, but in this case it was me moving to Washington D.C. for an internship.

It was funny that somehow everyone had the busiest month of their lives leaving a three hour window for all 16 family members to get together and say “cheese.” The date was set, the photographer booked, our color scheme solidified . . . phew.

I got a call the morning of the big day from my dad. It went a little something like this . . . “Just cooperate, and everyone will be happy.” End of conversation. Everyone else in the family got the same call and apparently that was sufficient. Everyone seemed to have a good time and we got some great shots.

It all started with the French Chicken Bake and before I knew it we had ourselves a French themed event.

I plan events for the Center for Service and Learning at BYU. I love it. For the first time in my life I'm planning events for someone other than myself. It is greater than I imagined. They like my ideas and compliment me often. I didn't know how I would react to creating events according to the preferences of others but it's working out well, I always find a way to slip my touch in there somewhere. This time everything had a touch of toile, even the name tags . . I couldn't resist and it's French, it was only fitting.

The event was lovely, the food was delicious - thank you Vikings Feast Catering - and now, I feel even more inspired to serve. As I heard about the experiences of others and reflected on my own, I realized I could make a difference too. In fact, I realized I already had.

The Center for Service and Learning is what it is - a place of service AND learning. I have spent hundreds of hours in and out of its doors serving. Because of the programs and opportunities provided to me by the CSL there is a desire instilled deep within my heart and mind to give lifelong service.

Whether the reach of your service is global or internal, you've made a difference. Service is contagious because it teaches and cleanses. With each act of service, it becomes more intuitive and more natural . . more pure.

I encourage everyone to seek opportunities to serve. As you do so, you'll realize you can make a difference. In fact, you'll realize you already do.

Award Winning Weekend . . .

The weekend of the sixth and seventh was award winning . . . Friday night was the "Glammy Awards" birthday party. Samantha Strong invited all of her friends to perform a karaoke number as part of her birthday celebration and it was nothing but a two hour riot. The costumes and talents were incredible. I sang "Feeling Good" by Michael Buble and walked away with the "Glammy Award" "Feeling Good."

Saturday night was no exception to the spirit of competition. I planned a Pinewood Derby for our ward activity and people loved it. Not only was every apartment able to make a car, but they all had a chance to win a Snuggie, a set of ShamWows, a huge remote control or a digital key chain camera. The competition was fierce but my apartment walked away with a designer leopard print Snuggie. Woo!

There is nothing like a clean mouth. In fact, I think it's prerequisite to getting a breath of fresh air. I love talking to someone that has such good breath that you can actually smell it without being uncomfortably close.
I had such an experience on Wednesday. There I was, at the Provo Temple and Brother Reynolds from Spanish Fork had overwhelmingly good breath. I couldn't help but stare at his mouth and notice the yellow colored, poorly positioned bridge in bottom of his mouth, but none of that mattered because his breath was divine. The scent was a crowd stopper and I began to wonder what my breath status was. This quickly led to paranoia.
In the end my compliments led to his confession that it wasn't mint at all, Halls cough drops was responsible!

A grapefruit a day keeps the doctor away . . .

First things first. I am not on the grapefruit diet, unless the only requirement is to eat a grapefruit daily. I'm not even sure what the grapefruit diet is, but I do eat a grapefruit everyday because I love them. I'm telling you, Boise will change your life. LuAnn would cut up grapefruit every morning for us and ever since then I have been a fan. I like to cut them in half, cut them into their sectors and pour sugar on top. So good. I usually find myself eating them after about eleven at night. Great late night snack.

The only connection that I had with Boise was the famous scene from the movie "Singles Ward" where a young man is called to serve in Boise, Idaho. That has all changed. My roommates and I all went to visit Jason's family over President's Day weekend and it was a blast. His parents took such good care of us. We especially love his mom LuAnn. What a peach! We didn't even have a chance to get hungry or need anything because she was always busy making sure that we were comfortable. One of the highlights was skiing at Bogus Basin. It had snowed a foot that day and it was beautiful. Boise isn't bad at all, in fact, I loved it.

I can't get enough of Paula Abdul, big hair, crayola colors, etc. Last night I watched "Can't Buy Me Love" with Patrick Dempsey, Amanda Peterson and Seth Green. I can't believe how much they've grown up since then. Crazy! The eighties seemed like a great time to be alive. My question is this: did they really where bright colors, tight clothes, balloon pants etc. Take a look at our eighties outfits and let me know how accurate we are. And if you're ever in the mood for eighties dancing visit Area 51 from 11 to 2 on Thursday nights.

Roll Making Lessons from a Professional

Last Saturday I made my first batch of rolls. My good friend Josephine was kind enough to give me her recipe and teach me the art of making rolls. She just kept telling me, "Now you can't mess these up, it's just not possible." Anything is possible when I'm in the kitchen, believe me. "It's about as easy as falling off a log," she said. It took a couple of hours but the finished product was really great. I know that there will be a bit of a learning curve but I'll keep trying to perfect Josephine's famous rolls.

Too Much of a Good Thing is Wonderful

Provo has a great new hang out. It's called Spark Restaurant/Lounge. It is pretty much the best thing to happen to Provo since the establishment of BYU. And maybe they're the only two things that have happened here. Oh man, this place is chic. When you walk in, you feel like you're in a big city lounge. The decor is modern and it has a very inviting atmosphere. All of their drinks are virgin and very delicious. I love to meet there late at night with friends that I don't see very often and just sit back and relax. I was talking with a few friends and we determined that since we found out about Spark five weeks ago, we've been more than fifteen times! Too much of a good thing is definitely wonderful.

I know, I know . . . ridiculous right? You guessed it. There were over seven thousand people dressed up in five piece Santa Suits for the 2008 Las Vegas Santa Run. Who would do that? Okay . . . I did and it was a blast. There were definitely a lot of different kinds of people that participated, but in the end the red suit suit definitely brought us all together. Merry Christmas.

My favorite gifts are the ones that you never would have thought to ask for but are perfect for you. Portis is a perfect addition to my apartment. A friend of mine and all of my roommates gave us our christmas gift early to aid us in all of our entertaining endeavors this holiday season. We named her Elaine. She's so practical and her design is very attractive. Don't you just love her legs? Next time you come over you'll have to test how strong her arms are. Trust me . . . great arms. So take off your coat and stay a while.

Happy Birthday Grandma Lexie! I love my grandma. She is so much fun. The two of us went to Kneaders today to celebrate her special day. She doesn't seem a bit older. She'll always have a young heart and she really is one sassy lady. I'm even jealous of how well she dresses. She's got style. She's one of the only "seniors" that I know that subscribes to Vogue and Bazaar. Not only does she have great taste but she is a great entertainer. I love to throw parties too so I must have picked that up from her. She is a great hostess and she has all of the gear for a great dinner party. She loves the finer things in life and she even said, "you can never be too good to yourself" when she decided to buy the most expensive toilet paper today at Walmart. Way to live it up Grandma! I love how optimistic she is. She is not hard to please at all and loves to be spontaneous. I love that about her. Although she is happiest when she's going anywhere in the car. I'm grateful to be her grandson and friend. Happy Birthday Lexie Fern.

Get a Clue!

Halloween was a riot. And please bless that you know what we dressed up as for Halloween! There's a girl with peacock feathers sprouting from her hat and I'm carrying a candlestick. Get a clue! So many times in life the answer is so plain that I don't recognize the obvious either. Do you ever make the same mistake over and over again and expect a different outcome each time? That is the definition of insanity and I show symptoms of this all too common disease daily.
Every once in a while it's fun to cut loose from daily life and be someone else - that's why I love Halloween. I chose to be Professor Plum: classy, smart and confident in purple - dreamy I know! (okay maybe not as dreamy as Edward but I'm trying). I feel like everyone's true colors are revealed on Halloween night and it's sometimes a little disturbing. There are tons of princesses which isn't surprising at all considering they usually have a tacky bumper sticky from the mall about how they're not spoiled and/or that they're the princess of the universe or at least of their daddy's world. The ones that really creep me out are the girls that seem to be so sweet but then they show up as a Playboy Bunny at a Halloween Party. Not to mention the fact that half of the boys over 13 show up dressed as girls. Just because it's Halloween doesn't mean that we don't recognize that they are living their fantasy through the holiday. Get a clue!

I'm officially a blogger. I started the account some time ago but I finally figured out what my address and password are. So here I am! I thought about having a theme but I've decided that I will just write about whatever I want. So don't be surprised if it's a scrapbook/shout out/current events catastrophe. I love to travel and participate in random activities of insanity like the marathon that I ran this month but I'll have to "blog" about that later. One of my favorite adventures was my recent trip to L.A. to see "Wicked" - it was out of this world. People often think that I'm constantly doing amazing things but I'd say that's debatable. Last night, for example, my roommates and I sat around with friends and found ourselves watching the screen saver on the TV for like twenty five minutes to see if the symbol would hit the corner at a perfect 45 degree angle. How's that for amazing?! I was ashamed to hear that there is an Office episode containing the same pathetic activity. Talk about embarrassing!
